Peace Alliance Winnipeg Makes Submission to Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs

In a written brief to the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs the Peace Alliance Winnipeg made known its opposition to any Canadian involvement in a U.S. anti-missile system. It said: "The New National Defence System is widely regarded as being in contravention of the ABM treaty and as such represents significant threat that the world will see a new arms race. Canadian participation in the NND will certainly put Canadians at risk that they will be involved in a military confrontation on the side of the United States and such a confrontation would certainly be a nuclear one."

The brief also called for an end to Canada's membership in the NATO alliance stating that Canada's continued membership in NATO is the "main vehicle by which Canada finds itself embroiled in conflicts."

The Standing Committee is currently reviewing Canada's future military needs.
