Rally in Support of OCAP Demonstrators

On June 29 over 80 people participated in a rally in front of the Manitoba Legislative Building in support of the OCAP demonstrators in Toronto who were viciously attacked by the police on June 15. The rally was organized by an ad-hoc committee of political and anti-poverty organizations.

Speakers condemned the police attack on the OCAP demonstrators and the growing state violence against the people. They also highlighted the problems associated with poverty, including increasing homelessness, in a country being touted as the "best in the world". Rather than addressing and solving these problems, Canadian governments at all levels are taking measures to expand police forces and increase their powers.

The organizers of the rally are planning to continue discussions over the summer months on the increasing problem of state violations of civil and human rights and on what measures can be taken to build opposition to this trend.
