Moncada Day Celebrated in Winnipeg

July 26 was Moncada Day, a Cuban national holiday. It marks the day in 1953 that a guerilla band led by Fidel Castro stormed the army barracks at Moncada, beginning the Cuban revolution.

Moncada Day was celebrated in Winnipeg on July 26 by over 200 people who attended an evening of food and entertainment hosted by the Manitoba-Cuba Solidarity Committee. Entertainment was provided by a number of dancers from the Cuban National Ballet who are currently studying with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and by Licanantay, a Latino musical group based in Winnipeg. A traditional Cuban meal of pork with rice and beans was enjoyed by the participants.
