U.S. Pursues Military Alliance With India
The chairman of the joint chief of the U.S. armed forces, General Henry H. Shelton, recently visited India and held high-level talks with Indian naval, air force and army chiefs, as well as Defence Minister Jaswant Singh. The Pentagon described the talks as "very productive" in advancing military to military relations between India and the U.S. The talks apparently centred on regional security concerns that the two countries hold in common.
The U.S. has denied that its defence ties with India are aimed at Pakistan or China. However, as part of its "Asia plan", the American strategy is to encourage India's ambitions to become a regional superpower and to direct it against China and the Arab peoples.
The U.S. pursuit of a military alliance with India, coupled with the Russia-China friendship treaty and tentative anti-NATO moves by Germany and France all indicate that the world is entering a very dangerous period of treaty-making and treaty-breaking, as the imperialist powers jockey for position. A similar situation preceeded both worlds wars of the 20th century.
