Second SMAC Discussion Forum Held
The second discussion in the fall series organized by the Winnipeg Structured Movement Against Capitalism (SMAC) was held November 7th. It took up the question of democracy and the movement and more specifically, how the movement makes decisions. Once again, the forum drew a capacity audience and was characterized by serious discussion.
Karen Naylor spoke on behalf of SMAC, presenting the position that the movement must establish mechanisms for democratic decision-making. Deborah Bourque, National Vice-President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, also gave this view. She gave some examples from the work in Ottawa of how the mentality of small-group autonomy is holding back the development of the movement against globalization and war. A member of the Mondragon Collective also spoke.
The next SMAC forum will be held at 7:00 p.m. Nov. 21 at the University of Winnipeg Bulman Centre, on the topic of globalization.
