May Day Celebrated in Winnipeg
May Day, international working class day, was celebrated by over 200 people in Winnipeg with a march and rally. The action began at City Hall with greetings being brought by some of the sponsoring organizations, as well as by a city councillor. A march then proceeded through the streets, concluding with a rally at Old Market Square. The rally was addressed by Deborah Bourque, National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, who gave a call for solidarity with all of the people around the world fighting against oppression and for social justice. She condemned the U.S.-backed aggression by the Israeli government against the Palestinian people and hailed the victory of the Venezuelan people in defeating the U.S.-organized coup against their president, Hugo Chavez. The rally was also addressed by Louis Ifill on behalf of the Workers of Colour Support Network and Dr. Ghassan Joundi, who spoke on the struggle of the Palestinian people.
