20th Annual Walk for Peace Held in Winnipeg
On Saturday June 15 the 20th Annual Walk for Peace took place in Winnipeg. Over 100 people participated.
The march is a traditional focal point for groups and organizations to express their concern about the issues of peace and security in the world. The theme of this year's Walk was "A World for People Not War".
In particular, the focus this year was the growing conflicts around the world, especially those incited by the policies of U.S. imperialism in the aftermath of September 11and its "War on Terrorism". Participants were also concerned about the Middle East, opposing the continued Israeli war of occupation and suppression of the Palestinian people, as well as the possibility of U.S. action against Iraq. Large banners at the front of the demonstration reflected both issues. One read, "The War on Terrorism is Terrorism" and the other, "End the Occupation/Peaceful Co-existence"
The march was well received as it wound its way through the streets of downtown Winnipeg. It ended with entertainment and speeches.
