Canadians From Coast to Coast Protest G-8 Summit
Despite all of the draconian security measures employed by the Canadian state, tens of thousands of Canadians took to the streets during the past week to express their opposition to the neo-liberal policies of the G-8 countries - the eight most powerful countries in the world. Demonstrations were organized in many cities, with major actions taking place in Calgary and Ottawa.
In Winnipeg a group of predominantly young activists organized a week-long "solidarity village" in a downtown park to express their solidarity with those who made the trip to Calgary to protest. They also held a symbolic "die-in" on June 27 to draw attention to the thousands of people who die every day due to hunger and preventable diseases as a result of the restructuring policies imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.
