Celebration of Cuba's Moncada Day in Winnipeg

July 26 marked the 49th anniversary of the storming of the Moncada Barracks of the Batista regime in Cuba in 1953 by a group of 134 revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro. This event is recognized as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution, which culminated in victory for the people six years later. The main historic significance of this event was that it showed the Cuban people that they could take action against the regime and fight to win.

For several years now, this event has been marked by a celebration in Winnipeg organized by the Manitoba-Cuba Solidarity Committee. This year's event was a picnic at Kildonan Park on July 28 attended by 75 people, including Cubans living in Winnipeg and their families, and friends of Cuba who recognize the importance of supporting Cuba in its struggle against the U.S. blockade. In addition to food, music, games and conversation, a number of presentations were made - on the history of Moncada Day; greetings from Cuban friends visiting Winnipeg; and information on current campaigns and projects.
