Growing Opposition to U.S. War Plans
On November 17 a National Day of Action was held against the increasing danger of a new U.S.- led war with Iraq.
Organized by the Canadian Peace Alliance and the Canadian Network to End Sanctions Against the War in Iraq, the Day of Action saw tens of thousands participate in demonstrations and other activities opposed to the war plans of the Bush Administration.
In Winnipeg about 1200 people participated in a demonstration that moved from City Hall to the Provincial Legislature. The demonstration was organized and supported by more than 25 organizations encompassing trade unions, political parties, peace and social justice groups, student organizations and native peoples. As it moved through the downtown the demonstration received a great deal of support from passersby and motorists.
The size of the demonstration, and the diversity of the participants, is an indication that Canadians do not buy the "justifications" for war being manufactured in Washington and the Security Council of the United Nations.
As the U.S. pressure for war mounts - just last week Richard Pearl, a top advisor to the Bush Administration, warned that war would take place even if UN inspectors determine that Iraq has no weapons of mass destruction. - Canadians are bound to find themselves at odds with a Government which is increasingly indicating that should war come Canada will be there to support the U.S.
