May Day Marked With March in Winnipeg

On May 1, over 200 people participated in the annual Winnipeg May Day march. The march, which was sponsored by the Winnipeg Labour Council and organized by the United May Day Committee, began at City Hall, wound past the Union Centre and concluded with a rally at Old Market Square.

The keynote speaker was Deborah Bourque, President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress. She spoke on the theme of Labour and Peace, with particular reference to the U.S. war against Iraq and its continuing occupation of that country. Her speech was followed by musical performances and the event wrapped up with the singing of The Internationale, led by members of the Winnipeg Labour Choir.
