Message of Greetings to Moncada Day Celebrations in Winnipeg from the Manitoba Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist) - July 26, 2003
On this 50th anniversary of Cuba's Moncada Day, the Manitoba Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist) extends its warmest revolutionary greetings to the people of Cuba, to their leaders, and especially to Comrade Fidel Castro who personally led the assault on the Moncada Barracks and who has been the leader of the Cuban revolution ever since.
This daring action, carried out on July 26, 1953, sparked a revolutionary movement throughout Cuban society which culminated in the 1959 overthrow of the Batista regime and the end of Cuba's status as a colony of the United States. However, the United States has never reconciled itself to the loss of its tropical playground and has spent over 43 years trying to strangle the Cuban revolution and subjugate the Cuban people.
It is to the great credit of the heroic Cuban people that despite being a mere 90 miles from the United States, despite over 40 years of a brutal economic embargo, despite the loss of many of its longtime allies and trading partners in the period from 1989 to 1991, the Cuban revolution has not faltered or fallen. This is testimony not only to wise leadership, but to the deep resolve of the Cuban people to live as a free and sovereign people. This is a spirit which has inspired oppressed peoples all over the world in their own struggles to rid their nations of imperialist domination and exploitation.
Cuba also stands as an inspiration to Canadians who reject the American domination of our country. If a small and poor country like Cuba can resist imperialist domination for over four decades, then why should a large and wealthy country such as Canada not also be able to throw off the yoke of imperialist domination?
