FTAA Opposed in Miami, Manitoba
On November 20, as the FTAA meetings were being held in Miami, Florida, the Structured Movement Against Capitalism (SMAC) organized an event in Miami, Manitoba to raise awareness about the dangers of such trade deals. Over 50 people, mostly high school students, attended the event, which was addressed by representatives of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Council of Canadians. Information was presented on how the adoption of the FTAA would affect the economy and the environment in Manitoba and what people can do to oppose it. Local municipal officials and teachers provided assistance in organizing the event.
