Cuban Farmers Coming to Winnipeg

As part of a one-month tour of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, a group of organic farmers from Cuba will spend ten days in Winnipeg from July 1 - 10. The farmers, seven men and two women, are accompanied by representatives from the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture and the Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP).

The farmers, who come from various regions of Cuba, are mainly engaged in produce production. Their scheduled activities during their stay include touring several organic farms outside the city, meeting with members of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba, touring the Canadian Wheat Board and the Canadian International Grains Institute, visiting an aboriginal reserve, and meeting with representatives of the provincial Department of Agriculture, among others.

The farmers will make a presentation on organic farming in Cuba at a public meeting on Monday, July 5, at 7:00 p.m. at Broadway Disciples United Church, Broadway & Kennedy, across from the Legislature.

This visit, co-sponsored by the Manitoba-Cuba Solidarity Committee, is part of an ongoing program to increase the people-to-people contact between Cubans and Canadians.
